Support the PLASTIC-FREE JULY Movement with Good Fills
We are happy to report that progress has been made around the world to combat the plastic pollution crisis. The global plastic pollution treaty is in development, and here in Central Florida, a proposal for a new Materials Recovery Facility (municipal recycling sorting facility) has been announced.
There’s still a long way to go, and we encourage you to participate in Plastic-Free July. How much single-use plastic can you cut out of your daily routine? It’s not just about the unsightly mess and damage to the ecosystem. Micro-plastic particles have been found in our gut, blood, lungs, and even our brains. Unfortunately, studies suggest this creates negative effects on our health.
Plastic can be hard to avoid; however, start by cutting it out of your food and drink containers. Reusable glass and metal food containers and bottles are toxin-free, look great, and can save you money in the long run. Metal containers are lighter and less prone to breaking. Glass ones are transparent for easy identification, and they are microwavable. Tempered ones can be used in the oven and freezer. Glass bottles also have zero chance of giving your water a metallic taste. Glass smoothie straws are a favorite, too.
For clothing: avoid synthetic fibers such as polyester, rayon, fleece. These fabrics shed microplastics in the washer and dryer, and enter our water supply and your home’s air. For clothing with synthetic fibers that you already own, try washing fewer times and consider using a washer bag or washing machine filter to capture these microplastics. To further reduce plastic shedding, line dry and save money, too!
Cut out plastic from household essentials that touch your body every day: bath, kitchen, and dental products. At Good Fills, they offer a wide selection of refillable shampoo, body wash, deodorant, hand soap, toothpaste tablets, and more.
