Understanding the Root Chakra
Aug 31, 2022 09:31AM ● By Kara DeweyThis
seven-month editorial series will explore chakras: What are they? What organs
are affected? How can I support my energy body health?
Chakras
are an integral part of physical, psychological and spiritual functions.
Scientific inquiry may one day prove what ancient scholars have long believed: Chakras
are a part of the energy body. The major acupuncture points in the Indian
traditions are called chakras (whirling energy centers). These energy centers
control and energize major organs. When they malfunction, the vital organs
become sick or dis-eased because they do not have enough life energy to
function properly.
Opinions
differ as to how many chakras exist. It is generally accepted that there are at
least seven major chakras. The first one is the Root chakra. It is located
at the base of the spine.
The Root chakra (also called Muladhara or Pitti kalam) is the
symbol of an elephant which is known as “abundant in strength.”
The physical functions of the Root chakra are linked to the
body, bones and overall vitality. The psychological functions are stability,
security and survival instincts. When the Root chakra is overactive, one
can suffer from hyperactivity, intolerance, and rigidity. When it is underactive,
poor health with slow recovery and lack of focus occur. One may feel they
do not have enough or are enough. The gland associated is the adrenal gland
which initiates a fight or flight response.
The color associated with it is red. Wearing and surrounding yourself in red helps to restore balance.
A yoga pose recommended is the Chair Pose (Utkatasana). There is no better way to directly open it than with the practice of this pose. This powerful pose, where the root takes the weight of the entire spine and the hips, enables a direct opening of the muscles around the lower part of the spine.
Walking barefoot in the grass and sitting under a tree is also
a great way to feel grounded.
To open the Root chakra, try infusing earthy essential oils
or burning incense or candles like sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli, rosemary,
and cinnamon.
For
food, think red! Apples, beets, tomatoes, strawberries.
The crystals are red tiger eye, ruby,
garnet, red jasper, hematite.
Mantra examples are “I love my body, and it
is my temple” and “I am rooted in the present moment.”
Root chakra health is the building block to a grounded life.
